The Luminous Nazarene .... according to Einstein,

"As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene." Einstein was then asked if he accepted the historical existence of Jesus, to which he replied, "Unquestionably! No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life." - Time Magazine

" I do not think it necessary for salvation to know Christ according to the flesh: but with regard to the Eternal Son of God, that is the Eternal Wisdom of God, which has manifested itself in all things and especially in the human mind, and above all in Christ Jesus, the case is far otherwise. For without this no one can come to a state of blessedness, inasmuch as it alone teaches, what is true or false, good or evil. And, inasmuch as this wisdom was made especially manifest through Jesus Christ, as I have said, His disciples preached it, in so far as it was revealed to them through Him, and thus showed that they could rejoice in that spirit of Christ more than the rest of mankind. The doctrines added by certain churches, such as that God took upon Himself human nature, I have expressly said that I do not understand; in fact, to speak the truth, they seem to me no less absurd than would a statement, that a circle had taken upon itself the nature of a square. This I think will be sufficient explanation of my opinions concerning the three points mentioned. Whether it will be satisfactory to Christians you will know better than I. "-  Baruch Spinoza  http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Baruch_Spinoza#Quotations

Scenes from the Movie "The Mystical Magical Cosmic Jesus " Coming soon to a Theater near you !

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus [The Twin]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the NAIL marks in his HANDS and put my finger where the NAILS were ...
 I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.

... And  though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my HANDS ....
Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God !”  -  Gospel of John  20

Then Jesus said: I am the Light that is above them all. I am the ALL; the all came forth from me, and the all attained to me. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up a stone, and you will find me there. - Gospel of Thomas, Saying  #77

The Logical Jewish Jesus .... Live Long and Prosper !

Spinoza as Jewish Jesus, a study for the Jewish Jesus Exhibit in NY

Jesus playing with dreidel at Hanukkah ...

Jesus with his brothers, sisters (cousins ?) playing with dreidel at Hanukkah, Festival of Light. Yeshua, Ya'acov bar Yosef etc ... A study for the Jewish Jesus Exhibit in NY. (painted with PicsArt watercolor for Galaxy Note, 2013)

Brothers ? A group of persons closely connected with Jesus appears repeatedly in the New Testament under the designation "his brothers" or "the brethren of the Lord" (Matthew 12:46, 13:55; Mark 3:31-32, 6:3; Luke 8:19-20; John 2:12, 7:3-5; Acts 1:14; 1 Corinthians 9:5). Four such "brethren" are mentioned by name in the parallel texts of Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3 (where "sisters" are also referred to), namely, James (also mentioned Galatians 1:19), Joseph, or Joses, Simon, and Jude; the incidental manner in which these names are given, shows, however, that the list lays no claim to completeness. Two questions in connection with these "brethren" of the Lord have long been, and are still now more than ever, the subject of controversy: The identity of James, Jude, and Simon; the exact nature of the relationship between Jesus and his "brethren".

The identity of James, Joseph, Jude and Simon :

James is without doubt the Bishop of Jerusalem (Acts 12:17, 15:13, 21:18; Galatians 1:19; 2:9-12) and the author of the first Catholic Epistle.... Of Joseph nothing further is known. Jude is the writer of the last of the Catholic Epistles (Jude 1).  About Simon nothing certain can be stated. He is identified by most commentators with the Symeon, or Simon, who, according to Hegesippus, was a son of Clopas, and succeeded James as Bishop of Jerusalem.   http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02767a.htm

On the dreidel are the letters Nun, Gimmel, Hey, Shin in gematria equals 358, which is also the numerical equivalent of mashiach or Messiah!

The dreidel is perhaps the most famous custom associated with Hanukkah..... the standard explanation is that the letters nun, gimmel, hey, shin, which appear on the dreidel in the Diaspora, stand for nes gadol haya sham --"a great miracle happened there,"while in Israel the dreidel says nun, gimmel, hey, pey, which means "a great miracle happened here." According to Jewish tradition, when they were in caves learning Torah, hiding from the Greeks, dreidel became a popular game to play. Legend has it that when the teacher would hear the Greek soldiers approaching, he would instruct the children to hide their torah scrolls and take out their dreidels instead.

Simchat Torah ... Did Jesus dance with the Torah ?

Simchat Torah : "The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion—and restart—of the annual Torah-reading cycle.
Did Jesus dance with the Torah ? Maybe. He certainly Rejoiced (Simchat) with Torah. However, if Jesus / Yeshua bar Yosef,  was actually born on the 1st day of Sukkot, (in a Sukkah) then 8 days later would have been his Naming Ceremony .... And he was named "Salvation" (YeShVaH)  ישועה  and on this day his family and friends would begin reading Torah once again.

Shemini Atzeret (שמיני עצרת – "Eighth [day of] Assembly"; Sefardic/Israeli pron. shəmini atzèret; Ashkenazic pron. shmini-atsères) is a Jewish holiday. It is celebrated on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. In the Diaspora, an additional day is celebrated, the second day being separately referred to as Simchat Torah. In Israel, the holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined into one and the names are used interchangeably.  שמי ניעצת   .... שמי ניע

The very term "Shemini" , 8th day has the root, Shem, Name (Naming) .... שמיני עצרת

שמי נצת .... שמי ניע

So at the end of Sukkot, Shemini (on the 8th day) ... they celebrate the Naming of Yeshua .... the branch. The NeTzeR.     שמי נֵצֶר .... שמי ניע

שמיני עצרת ..... שמי נצת .... שמי ניע   ....  שמי נֵצֶר

Shemini Atzeret : Shem iNiTzeRet

Eighth Day of Assembly / My Name is Everlasting ... My Name is Still ... My Name is Branch (NeTZR)

Repainting for the Jewish Jesus Exhibit - "Ecce Homo", 1650 by Mateo Cerezo and "Yeshua bar-Yosef" by RBorg

Left : Ecce Homo, 1650 by Mateo Cerezo Right: Yeshua bar-yosef, 2013 by R Borg

Mateo Cerezo (19 April 1637 – 29 June 1666) was a Baroque Spanish painter. In 1654 he moved to Madrid and studied with Juan Carreno de Miranda and possibly with Antonio de Pereda. He died young at age forty years, and much of his work is at the Prado Museum in Madrid, as well as at the Museo de Burgos.

Ecce homo (pronounced [ˈetʃːe ˈomo] or [ˈekːe ˈhomo]) are the Latin words used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgate translation of John 19:5, when he presents a scourged Jesus Christ, bound and crowned with thorns, to a hostile crowd shortly before his Crucifixion. The original Greek is Ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄνθρωπος (Idou ho anthrōpos). The King James Version translates the phrase into English as "Behold the man!"[John 19:5] The scene is widely depicted in Christian art. Especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, the meaning of ecce homo motif has been extended to the portrayal of suffering and the degradation of humans through violence and war. An Ecce Homo fresco by 19th-century Spanish painter Elías García Martínez recently gained notoriety when a woman named Cecilia Giménez took it upon herself to restore it without any training or expertise, resulting in Jesus' looking like "a very hairy monkey".[4] The “monkey Christ” painting has become a tourist attraction and destination. So many people were flocking to see the painting that the town started charging an admission fee, which has raked in more than 50,000 euros (£43,000) for charity as of mid August 2013

Last Supper / Seder Meal with Women and Children, Borghese Gallery

This Seder Meal includes the 3 Mary's and several nieces and nephews .... The Gospel of John places other women (The Three Marys), at the cross. It states that Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.[Jn. 19:25] It is uncertain whether the Gospel of John totally refers to three or four women at the cross. References to the women are also made in Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40 (which also mentions Salome) and comparing these references they all seem to include Mary Magdalene

Was Jesus a red head with beautiful eyes ?

Was Jesus a red head ? אַדְמוֹנִי   If hair color is maternal maybe ....

"So Samuel asks: “Don’t you have any more sons?” Jesse, a little flustered, responds: “Well, there is still the youngest one, but he is out tending sheep.” The little one is David. Samuel demands that Jesse go get him and as soon as little red-headed David bar Jesse appears, Samuel knows he is the one. Despite the fact that physically he’s not so impressive, he has what it takes to be the strong leader Israel needs."

From Samuel 1 16:12  http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/15845/jewish/Chapter-16.htm

If Jesus (Yeshua bar yosef) was decended from David bar jesse through Mary's line, and hair color is maternal it is possible Jesus also had read hair. If "ruddy" is referring to complexion then maybe David, and Jesus were red skinned ? coloring ? Maybe David belonged to maternal Haplogroup X2a ? One day DNA will settle all these questions.....

Repainting : A quick study from Albrecht Durer's "Christ among the Doctors" dating to 1506, now in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain. Repainted by RBorg 2013.

Based on Luke 2: 46-50 ..... "After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them."

The Protoevangelium of James 9 :  And Joseph, throwing away his axe, went out to meet them; and when they had assembled, they went away to the high priest, taking with them their rods. And he, taking the rods of all of them, entered into the temple, and prayed; and having ended his prayer, he took the rods and came out, and gave them to them: but there was no sign in them, and Joseph took his rod last; and, behold, a dove came out of the rod, and flew upon Joseph's head. And the priest said to Joseph, You have been chosen by lot to take into your keeping the virgin of the Lord. But Joseph refused, saying: I have children, and I am an old man, and she is a young girl. I am afraid lest I become a laughing-stock to the sons of Israel. And the priest said to Joseph: Fear the Lord your God, and remember what the Lord did to Dathan, and Abiram, and Korah; Numbers 16:31-33 how the earth opened, and they were swallowed up on account of their contradiction. And now fear, O Joseph, lest the same things happen in your house. And Joseph was afraid, and took her into his keeping. And Joseph said to Mary: Behold, I have received you from the temple of the Lord; and now I leave you in my house, and go away to build my buildings, and I shall come to you. The Lord will protect you. http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0847.htm

The Real Face Of Jesus ? (Re-paint) PopularMechanics.com

Repainting the Most Accurate image of Jesus ....

PopularMechanics.com : From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their minds. In North America he is most often depicted as being taller than his disciples, lean, with long, flowing, light brown hair, fair skin and light-colored eyes. Familiar though this image may be, it is inherently flawed. A person with these features and physical bearing would have looked very different from everyone else in the region where Jesus lived and ministered. Surely the authors of the Bible would have mentioned so stark a contrast. On the contrary, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane before the Crucifixion, Judas Iscariot had to indicate to the soldiers whom Jesus was because they could not tell him apart from his disciples. Further clouding the question of what Jesus looked like is the simple fact that nowhere in the New Testament is Jesus described, nor have any drawings of him ever been uncovered. There is the additional problem of having neither a skeleton nor other bodily remains to probe for DNA. In the absence of evidence, our images of Jesus have been left to the imagination of artists. The influences of the artists' cultures and traditions can be profound, observes Carlos F. Cardoza-Orlandi, associate professor of world Christianity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta. "While Western imagery is dominant, in other parts of the world he is often shown as black, Arab or Hispanic." And so the fundamental question remains: What did Jesus look like?

An answer has emerged from an exciting new field of science: forensic anthropology. Using methods similar to those police have developed to solve crimes, British scientists, assisted by Israeli archeologists, have re-created what they believe is the most accurate image of the most famous face in human history.

The mystical and radiant risen Lord appears to Thomas, the Twin, and says "Behold the hand, behold the nail" .... Yud Hey Vav Hey

Here is an explanation of what Jesus said to Thomas .... and why Thomas said to Jesus "MY LORD AND MY GOD"

Jesus Appears to Thomas (John 20)

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus [The Twin]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the NAIL marks in his HANDS and put my finger where the NAILS were, and put my HAND into his side, I will not believe.”
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my HANDS.  Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Why does Thomas say "My Lord and my God" ?

When translated into English from the original Hebrew the word "Lord" is used in place of the actual hidden name of God  --  יְהֹוָה  --  The 4 Hebrew letters YHWH.  The Hebrew letters written from right to left are .... Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh

These are the words spoken unto Moses (Exodus 3:15)

3:15 And God said further to Moses, "So shall you say to the children of Israel, 'The LORD (יְהֹוָה) God (אֱלֹהֵי) of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is how I should be mentioned in every generation.

The Name (ha-Shem) of God is yud-heh-vav-heh  (read from right to left) .....

    Heh         Vav         Heh        Yud

Each letter is originally a proto-hebrew pictograph with the following meanings:

Yod

-Yod or yud was anciently portrayed as a symbol of a hand [yad in Hebrew]. This is the entire hand, or closed hand [in contrast with the letter kaf, which comes from the pictograph of the palm of the hand]. The closed hand denotes power and, figuratively, ownership.
-Yod is masculine. In the sacred name Yahweh, it is representative of the Father.
-Yod is the seminal letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It cannot be divided into component parts, like other letters can. It signifies the oneness of Elohim.
-The yod is the smallest [and most humble] letter. From it, the other letters originate. It is symbolic of creation.

Hey

-The letter hey is feminine, and represents femininity and gentleness. The first hey in the Name is representative of the Mother / Holy Spirit / Eloah.
-Hey means ‘behold’, ‘to show’ or ‘to reveal’.

Vav

-Vav is also masculine in gender.
-Vav signifies a nail, peg, or hook. It also conveys the meaning of being nailed or bound together.
-The numerical value of vav is 6.

They are pronounced, in Hebrew, "Yod Hey Vav Hey," when you read them in the Hebrew manner from right to left.

The four letters in God's name in Hebrew have the following meanings:

Hey = Behold

Vav = Nail

Yod = Closed Hand

When read in English from left to right, it says:

"BEHOLD THE NAIL, BEHOLD THE HAND!" Or, "Behold the nailed hand."

Jesus, the Kabbalist, drawing 10 Sephiroth in the Sand

Jesus drawing 10 Sephiroth in the Sand, a Study for the Jewish Jesus Exhibit in New York

Sephirot (Hebrew: סְפִירוֹת‎ ) are the 10 attributes/emanations in Kabbalah, through which Ein Sof (The Infinite) reveals himself and continuously creates both the physical realm and the chain of higher metaphysical realms (Seder hishtalshelus).

Alternative configurations of the sephirot are given by different schools in the historical development of Kabbalah, with each articulating different spiritual aspects. The tradition of enumerating 10 is stated in the Sefer Yetzirah, (Book of Formation) "Ten sephirot of nothingness, ten and not nine, ten and not eleven". As altogether 11 sephirot are listed across the different schemes, two (Keter and Daat) are seen as unconscious and conscious manifestations of the same principle, conserving the ten categories.

In Kabbalah the functional structure of the sephirot in channeling Divine creative life force, and revealing the unknowable Divine essence to Creation is described.

Did Jesus study Kabbalah ? Did he study and teach the mystical aspects of the Hebrew letters ?
There is a clue to be found in the early Christian writings known as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas:

VI. 1 Now a certain teacher, Zacchaeus by name, stood there and he heard in part when Jesus said these things to his father and he marvelled greatly that being a young child he spake such matters.

2. after a few days he came near unto Joseph and said unto him: Thou hast a wise child, and he hath understanding. Come, deliver him to me that he may learn letters. And I will teach him with the letters all knowledge and that he salute all the elders and honour them as grandfathers and fathers, and love them of his own years.

3 And he told him all the letters from Aleph even to Tav clearly, with much questioning. But Jesus looked upon Zacchaeus the teacher and saith unto him: Thou that knowest not the Aleph according to its nature, how canst thou teach others the Bet? thou hypocrite, first, if thou knowest it, teach the Aleph, and then will we believe thee concerning the Bet. Then began he to confound the mouth of the teacher concerning the first letter, and he could not prevail to answer him.

4 And in the hearing of many the young child saith to Zacchaeus: Hear, O teacher, the ordinance of the first letter and pay heed to this, how that it hath lines, and a middle mark, which thou seest, common to both, going apart; coming together, raised up on high, dancing, of three signs, like in kind, balanced, equal in measure]: thou hast the rules of the Aleph.

VII. 1 Now when Zacchaeus the teacher heard such and so many allegories of the first letter spoken by the young child, he was perplexed at his answer and his instruction being so great, and said to them that were there: Woe is me, ....  I am confounded...

Aleph in Jewish mysticism represents the oneness of God. The letter can been seen as being composed of an upper yud (Yodh), a lower yud, and a vav (Waw (letter)) leaning on a diagonal. The upper yud represents the hidden and ineffable aspects of God while the lower yud represents God's revelation and presence in the world. The vav ("hook") connects the two realms.

In the Aleph is hidden the mystery of the 3 in One :  The ordinance of the first letter :  it hath lines, and a middle mark, which thou seest, common to both, going apart; coming together, raised up on high, dancing, of three signs, like in kind, balanced, equal in measure: thou hast the rules of the Aleph !

Jesus as Tiferet, Beauty, The Son and the Prince of Peace

The 10 Sephiroth with Keter-Crown at top, Chokhmah-Wisdom (Father) and Binah-Understanding (Mother). Jesus is shown as Tiferet, Beauty, The Son, and the Prince of Peace.
Tiferet ("Adornment", Hebrew: תפארת [tiˈfeʔʁeθ]) alternately Tifaret, Tifereth, Tyfereth or Tiphereth, is the sixth sefira in the kabbalistic Tree of Life. It has the common association of "Spirituality", "Balance", "Integration", "Beauty", "Miracles", and "Compassion".

Jesus before his Judges - Maurycy Gottlieb, 1877

Maurycy Gottlieb, Jesus Before His Judges, ca. 1877. Gottlieb was one of the first Western figures to profess what today we’d call a hybrid identity—as both a Polish and a Jewish artist. He painted images of Jews from literature (Shylock), history (Portuguese converso Uriel d’Acosta), the Bible (himself as Ahasuerus), and daily life (Jews Praying in the Synagogue on Yom Kippur) before plunging into the charged subject matter of the life of Christ. In Jesus Before His Judges, illustrating the scene from Matthew, viewers can clearly see that the noble, gentle figure of Jesus is Jewish by his clothing and side curls. And they can also clearly see the Romans in the background at the right, a pointed reminder of who was responsible for Jesus’ crucifixion. “How deeply I wish to eradicate all the prejudices against my people,” wrote Gottlieb, who went on to paint another scene in the life of Jesus, Christ Preaching at Capernaum, in 1878. His work, he dreamed, could help “uproot the hatred enveloping the oppressed and tormented nation and to bring peace between the Poles and the Jews, for the history of both people is a chronicle of grief and anguish.” Collection of the Israel Museum.

The Last Supper, Casting call for a Jewish " Jesus Christ (Media) Superstar "

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musical started as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, struggles that are not in the Bible. The resurrection is not included. It therefore largely follows the form of a traditionalpassion play.
The work's depiction offers a free interpretation of the psychology of Jesus and the other characters. A large part of the plot focuses on the character of Judas, who is depicted as atragic figure dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus steers his disciples. Contemporary attitudes and sensibilities as well as slang pervade the lyrics and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events. Stage and film productions accordingly feature many intentional anachronisms.

This one may be a little controversial.... The Last supper 2014 .... A casting call for a Jewish Jesus Christ (media) superstar.....

After Google posted its big numbers yesterday I realized that many of the media (new and old media)  super stars are  Jewish.... Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, Bob Iger, Shell Adelson, Leslie Moonvez..... so I decided I would assemble them all at a seder table and use them as Jewish models for a new version of the Iconic "Last Supper"

This is not an Anti-Semitic painting.... (it is Pro-Semitic)  all of  my heroes  are  Jewish.... Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, Baruch Spinoza, Jesus, Moses Cordovero, Isaac Luria, Abraham Abulafia, Chaim Vital, Aryeh Kaplan, Baal Shem Tov, Larry Page, Marc Zuckerberg, the disciples James, John and especially Thomas, Ram Dass, St John of the cross, St Theresa of Avila and many more etc....

I would have used images of the many Jewish Nobel Prize Winners but nobody would recognize them. So I went with the current roster of Media Superstars. Amazing Talent and Genius !

As it is written:  "For you are a holy people to the Lord, your God: the Lord your God has chosen you to be His treasured people, out of all the peoples upon the face of the earth. Not because you are more numerous than any people did the Lord delight in you and choose you, for you are the least of all the peoples.   Deut 7:6-7  http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/9971/jewish/Chapter-7.htm

Why is poor Lloyd Blankfein depicted as Judas Iscariot ? ... as the CEO of Goldman Sachs he represents the 40 pieces of silver traded in exchange for the Life of Jesus. Truly, the story could not have been accomplished if not for the essential role of Judas. I have no issues with Judas or Goldman Sachs, everything is required.

Paintings of a Jewish Jesus

I am repainting Christian works of art from the Renaissance and Middle Ages in their proper 1st Century Judean and Galilean context. I'll post studies for larger paintings here for feedback and comments. Eventually these works will be part of an Exhibit by Bernard Starr in New York, based on the idea from his book ....   "Jesus Uncensored - Restoring the authentic Jew"
